Brilliant achievement, congratulations your car looks superb. That is quite a tally of days!

Since it's all so fresh, looking back what do you think you nailed, and what would you have done different?

Indeed, congratulations! You've really stuck with it. Now, your rewards will come as you enjoy the car over the upcoming years. It's an accomplishment few people are able to do.

Cheers,

 What are the fender plans?

Green scotchbrite pads lubed with wd40 to prevent clogging are 600 grit and leave a nice finish that is easy to maintain. You can follow up with mothers if you don't have all the equipment.

Empire abrasives is a good source.

Thanks guys!

The car is a blast to drive, can't wipe the grin off my face. Lots and lots of waves, horn honking, thumbs up, etc. I used to have a 1974 Datsun 620:
Image
which I got alot of attention in, but it pales in comparison to the Locost.

So far I've just gone on short jaunts around town, then bring it back to the garage and go over it with the flashlight looking for cracks, loose bolts, etc. So far so good. Gauges all seem to be working. Fan hasn't kicked on yet, which does have me wondering if it doesn't work or hasn't gotten hot enough yet. Gauge has it as not hot enough yet, but I'll be keeping my eye on it.

Was thinking of going with basic steel fenders but am rolling the idea of powder coating them around in my mind. Wanted to go with fiberglass ones from the UK, but my tires are too wide, and they wont fit. What's the rest of your post there MiataV8, recommendations for polishing aluminum?

It looks great. When/if the skin gets scuffed up and needs polishing or you just want a quick, uniform appearance without the hassle.
Red nylon rolocs are great for blending a gouge with a drill arbor, then blue/grey, then green pad in one direction so it catches the light uniformly.

I luv that truck! No wait, that was a chevy model.

Have a few things I'm trying to finish off....

Getting my cousin to sew a rear cover. Her work is usually excellent, so I have high hopes for it. Using a waterproof canvas. She threw a little snark in though...

Me: I'm not in a huge rush on this.
Her: I hope not, how long have you been working on this now?

Going for a 2" overlap on the sides and back, 3/4" on the front, and snaps every 6".

Anyway, I put together a pretty amazing CAD template for her:

Fenders are proving to be trickier. Wanted fiber ones from Kit cars Direct but they don't fit. Tried ones from Princess Auto. They fit, but not great:

Fitment is good at the top, but then on the front and back it's about 2-3" away from the tire. That was a 31" fender, just ordered a 28" for fitment purposes which is suppost to be here on Friday. Hoping it looks great.

Also got my fuel tank vent installed.

ps. for anyone in Western Canada looking for generic steel fenders, a 31" fender at Princess Auto is regularly $69.99. A 28" fender is $25 at Allan Dale.

Truly well done! Funny how time marches on and life changes so much while we do these projects!

Are you going to add a windshield? Or did I miss something?

Thom

I missed this the first few times around....

What I'd have done different, is, when I built the car, I broke it down into a series of tasks. I often time would compete a task to 90-95%, with the mindset of "lets just get it on there, and get the car running, then I can come back and finish it". I wish I hadn't done that, it would have been way easier to finish the task 100% at the time, vs trying to come back later and finish that last 5%.

I may switch over to a windshield. I don't have any photos of it installed, but I've got a 6" tall windscreen.

I'm excited, the moment of truth in about an hour, will the 28" fenders fit well.....

Well, that was extremely disappointing. It's essentially the exact same radius, just cut shorter. :(

Trochu - you can shrink the flanges on the fender and get it to fit perfect. All you need are pliers, a hammer and dolly and some time. Look up tuck shrinking on YouTube. Wray at Proshaper has a good series on making a motorcycle fender which is the same process

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwGroFmWUUc

That is gong to be a nice looking car so you need to make sure everything fits properly.

I'd be interested to see the short 'screen installed. Planning on similar on mine.
