A bit of time spent on the rear of the car.. These pics show that I've bored out 9 'heat escape' holes across the bottom rearmost section of the punt.. I know I'm getting a lot of hot air coming down through the driveshaft tunnel, and it's got nowhere to go as it gets to the rear of the car, so cut these vent holes in.. They're almost impossible to see when you're standing, or even kneeling at the car..

More rear panel work..

The yellow arrow is pointing out the "Back Off!" brake light modulator.. In this case, I've only wired it into the third brake light (a thin LED strip light just above the license plate). It rapidly strobes 5 times and then stays solid when you apply the brakes.. I like it, and it seems to command attention..

The other pics here just show off my wonderful little black-on-yellow YOM (1959) license plate, which is the shiniest, prettiest part on the whole car

Back to the front..

The front bellcranks that I've been running were cut/welded/redrilled a few times as I experimented with getting the correct ratio.. Very much a trial and error thing. I'm pretty sure I'm dialed in now, so I went back and made what I believe with be the 'permanent' front bellcranks..

Putting the final touches on sealing the firewall

The first pic is not the firewall at all, but a random pic as I rewired the headlights and fog lights (now all LED) to run together.. this pic shows the nose as bright as I know how to make it..

The rest of the pics are in fact of the removable firewall pieces that install once the body is in place.. I promise, no more firewall pics after this :)

Nice work, as always.
Any concerns with water/debris ingress with the rear speed [heat] holes?

The Queen's English Car Show, Van Nuys, Ca

Got out of the garage yesterday (8-1-21), and drove the Berkeley to the Queen's car show down in SoCal.. The show was well attended and I met some great people.. Steve, the guy who bought my Honda 600 on Bat several years ago, lives nearby and he popped over to visit and see the Berkeley in person. A good time

It was 270 miles round trip for me, and the car did great.. I'm still having heat intrusion issues in the passenger compartment, so I'll continue seal up the body (I think most of my issues now are at the floor level).. On the engine side of cooling, I'm now convinced I'll need to upsize my radiator a bit- The car did fine, but I really have to watch the temp gauge, and it makes me nervous.. If you've ever had a car that 'runs hot,' you know how stressful it can be- I don't like that feeling at all- I'm going to make changes to get this cooling issue off that ragged edge..

It was a hot day, and I tried a "Cooling Vest" that motorcycle guys use.. it's a vest that you soak in water, wring it out slightly, and wear it over your shirt.. you get a little wet, but the evaporative action of the water in the vest sort of pulls your body heat away from you.. certainly it's not AC, butt worked pretty well! At very least it took the edge off of the miserable heat.. This was a trial run really, as I'm headed to Reno in a few days, and it will be very hot there too.. I'll take the cooling vest for sure

A few pics from my spot at the show.. sadly, mine was the only Berkeley there.. Last pic is of of the road construction traffic jam I got caught in just south of Santa Barbara.. I wasn't even upset; just turned up the earbuds, looked out at the passing ocean, and thought there are worse places to be stuck in traffic 8)

Hey JAMADOR.. yes you're onto something there.. I'm not as worried about water as this car will likely never see rain (no wipers, no top), but I'll have to be careful with the garden hose once I have a finish worth washing  ... Also, there are several small-ish drain holes all up and down the length of the punt (aka belly pan).

As for debris/road junk getting up in there.. I think that's a valid concern too.. I can take the rear cover ("Dickey") off and have a bit of access to the area, and maybe blow it out as needed- I can also drop the skid plate(s) and have a bit of access there too. When I decided to cut huge holes in the body I rationalized that it's a special use, 'fun' car that will not see normal challenges like car washes, or rain, of tumble weeds, etc..

Not sure how, without having a positive pressure area in the rear, but wonder if there's a way to engineer a 1-way 'check-valve' that would let heat out & keep debris & such from getting in?

The Cliff Notes version of the build..

Confession time; I'm that guy.. the guy at the car show that endlessly peppers the owner with questions.. How did you do this?... Where did you source that?... How did you resolve problem xyz?.. blah blah blah :D

That guy is me.. he's my spirit animal.. he's the brother I never had.. I love him, and no offense to him, but he's exhausting!

Don't get me wrong- I love meeting people and talking cars; I could do it all day. But the same legit question over and over and over wear me down, so I decided to try a thing I've seen guys do at car shows- I made a 'photo album' of the project.. Just a bare-bones 20 page summary of the thing, but it answers the most basic of questions, and I know when I see one of these albums sitting on the car, I like to leaf through it and at very least see what the builder started with..

So surely most people won't be interested or care enough to look through a silly build book, but the guys with questions, my brothers (and sisters!), will maybe skim the pages to see what's what. I love it when if the owner is not around for me to ask my many questions to, they've left a book out like this for people to look at.

I'm taking the Berkeley to Hot August Nights in Reno later this week, so I'll let you know how my little photo-book experiment works out.. I'm looking forward to spending time with my peeps up there, where vintage cars are celebrated city-wide for an entire week every August

Well done, again! I usually thumb thru those types of books at car shows. They are a great source of connecting with like-minded builders vs the checkbook guys. Don't get me wrong, I like the checkbook cars, I just have more respect for the builders.

It just came to me. Have you thought about printing up some business cards to hand out with the URL of your build (s) for those diehard guys and dreamers to view in more detail?

I just marvel at the "Swiss watch" nature of your build. Sometimes my eyes cross looking at how complicated it is, yet so small too.

Keep it up. It's going to be quite an accomplishment when it's finished.

Cheers,

Some sort of metal screen jumps to mind. It might even keep rodents out.

Vacation Pictures! Yay!

So here we are... me, foisting my vacation pictures upon you.. ugh

Wait! No pics of Grandma, or my wife, or even my kids, I promise! It's mostly car stuff

The following few dozen pics were taken at Hot August Nights in Reno, NV last week (Aug 2021).. Just pics of things that caught my fancy.. maybe something here of interest to you.. then again, they are someone else's vacation pics, so maybe not

------

That giant 'cloud' is smoke from one of the many CA fires (pic was taken on highway 80 near Auburn, CA late afternoon on Aug 4).. this smoke would blow over and blanket Reno for the rest of the week.. // The giant post next to the Berk (Highway 431 between Reno and Lake Tahoe) is to guide the snow plows when things get as much at 15 feet deep!?! I had no idea they sometimes get that much snow!.. // Next pic is just a wideshot of the action at the Atlantis Casino/Hotel parking lot.. // Last pic is a bad shot of a 68-72 'bumpside' Ford crewcab.. I almost never see these.. rare truck.. I didn't see him anywhere else during the rest of the show (the show is spread out all over the city.. various hotels.. city streets.. you can never see it all as the vintage cars are quite literally all over the place, and never all in one place)..

Still shocking how tiny the Berk is when placed next to more common cars.

Did you actually drive the Berkeley to Reno, or trailer it up there?

Cheers,
