The gas tank has been modded and is now in service.. no leaks-- yay

Now onto fabbing the removable frame corner supports.. these are important as they give a solid/inflexible mounting point (red circles) for the rear body section once it's set into place..

The last pic shows the car as it sits today (12-16-21); I'm taking it all back apart again over our school Christmas break to make some modifications; battery relocated to the rear/ a firewall rework/ a steering column (turn signal switch) rework/ a radiator rework/ and generally several minor mods that can't be done easily with the body in the way..

Winter break work: Dec-Jan, 2021/2022

This is a laundry list of the mods I went after over the school X-mas break these last few weeks.. Pics to follow soon..

-Upgrade from the stock Regulator/Rectifier; a known weak point with this motor..
-Clearance pass UCA for fitment/ bolt access..
-Swap in low-mileage motor (14K); trim various tabs and edges to allow to fit in the Berk chassis..
-Lower/move oil cooler to accommodate/clear coming (larger) radiator swap..
-Run/drive 'new' motor 30 miles with Seafoam in crankcase- change out for new oil and filter..
-Fab anchor strap for leading edge of fuel tank..
-Move battery from under dash to the rear of the car (pass corner)- fab battery hold down..
-Rework radiator support to be more modular to ease install of coming larger radiator..
-Add turn signal stalk w/ self-cancelling signal to steering column (replaces old momentary toggle switch turn signals)
-Add 2" steering wheel spacer to clear new turn stalk (I will revisit this later to improve its looks)..
-Paint/install newly fabbed brackets at fuel tank..
-Paint/install newly altered radiator support brackets..
-Clearance frame at motor's shift lever to allow better access..
-Split/recontour/fiberglass aluminum front inner fenders to clear larger diameter tires at full lock..
-Alter/mod/fab Austin Healey 100 windshield frame and pillars to fit the Berk body (screen is polycarbonate)..
-Add several 'drain-back' holes to oil pan baffle plate..
-Fab/rework firewall where battery used to live up under the dash..

Battery relocation. I originally had the battery tucked way up under the nose of the car, on the inside/passenger side of the firewall, up behind the dash. This was very poor planning on my part, as it made accessing the battery virtually impossible without removing the entire nose of the car. With the car blown apart yet again this winter, I've decided to refine and rework some of my previous design, and in this case, the effort is to get the battery down low, and out to the back of the car where it can actually be accessed if need be, and maybe even help me reach a 50/50 f-r weight bias.

USB/USB-C outlet and volt meter..

This is a nifty little device I found on Amazon.. gets me a charger for my cell phone and also functions as a voltage gauge.. seems to read pretty accurate, but it was cheap, so let's see how long it lasts..

Steering column turn switch and regulator/rectifier..

I found this cool aftermarket turn signal switch at Speedway Motors and thought I'd give it a try (it required that I swap out the hub splines).. I've been using an under dash momentary toggle switch as a turn signal switch, but this on is easier to reach.. it also has a small button on the end that I'm using for the horn; also easier to reach..

--The OEM Honda rectifier has given many an owner grief, so I swapped in different wiring and an entirely different unit to try and avoid any failures before they even happen.. again, so much easier to do this stuff with the body off, so this seemed the right time to chase it..

I installed a similar usb dvm with blue digits and a snap-in square flange. The tracker has a lot of blank, snap-in panels so it was easy with a little filing. It ties into the accessory circuit with the lighter and radio. It's nice to have more than an idiot light.

I guess the exhaust baffle is low on the priorities right now.

Why is the bellypan flange cutout in the middle rear behind the tank? I thought the flange bolted to the upper body all the way around the edge.

I love this little voltmeter/charger.. I hope it holds up

The exhaust baffle is in fact back burner right now.. I've begun to wonder if I'm getting the majority of my unwanted engine noise from my lidless intake through the temporary giant hole I have in the hood  My hearing isn't the best, so it's hard to judge where the noise is coming from-- I just know it's loud..

Finally- the belly pan hack job back behind the fuel tank is (will be) the recessed area for the rear license plate.. The body/tail section sits back down over that cutout, and I have a small panel that fills void..

I am using one of those charger/voltmeters on my Spitfire. Not sure if it is the same, I got this one on Amazon about 4 years ago https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07H1 ... UTF8&psc=1 . It has held up great over 3 years of continuous use. If yours is similar or the same I suspect you’ll be happy with it. Key difference is likely vibration level.

I know exactly what you are saying about hearing. I’m basically deaf in my right ear and the left is poor and I use aids. Telling where a sound is coming from is basically impossible.

Thank you for posting about how you are coming, looks like you are using your time off very well.

Cheers,
Eric

Thanks for the link Eric- it's pretty much the same piece- I'm glad to hear it's holding up.. bits like this can be a bit hit and miss..

Re-sealing the Firewall..

With the battery now moved to the rear of the car, I've left a gaping hole in the upper passenger side of the firewall- gotta seal that up or it will cook me! (cabin temp control has been a real challenge on this little roadster).. I've made a small panel that will bolt in and cover the hole (1st 2 pics)..

Getting Maximum Steering Lock to Lock..

The new tires are a touch taller than the last set, which has introduced a minor clearance problem in the lower rear area of the front inner fenders. This is me being picky, and really seeking the tightest turning radius possible.. I needed to shave out a small sliver of the punt/belly pan where it curls up around the frame at the inner fender/ leading edge... I had to also then go in a slightly recontour the aluminum inner fender panels.. A very subtle mod, but it gets me an additional few degrees at each end of the steering rack travel..

A few pics of the previously flat inner fender being given an inward facing fiberglass bulge to clear the tires at full lock..

This shows a minor addition to the front removable crossmember.. I'm learning the the fragile fiberglass body currently does not have enough mounting points (as it has become an unstressed member), so I've modded in these inner fender anchor points. I will fab 2 small, light rods that will connect from these two points on the frame, and will reach up and bolt to the body at the upper aluminum inner fenders. Should stiffen things up quite a bit 8)

A few odd pics that don't fit anywhere else..

Although I'm about to undertake an exhaust rework to try to further quiet this thing down, in the interim, I'm getting the proverbial 'hot foot' just under my right heel as that's where the exhaust is routed. This header wrap should get me through for the short term..

Another engine?.. Yup.. I was getting a faint knocking sound on the last motor once things were warmed up, so I pressed the easy button and found this low mileage engine (14K) online and scooped it up..

Cooling Issues..

I've been running a radiator that is simply too small to get the job done.. like so many details in these builds, it's trial and error; sometimes you win, sometimes not

In the near future I plan to swap in a larger, more appropriate radiator (I can keep running this little unit for now as it's still winter/cold).. In a effort to make it easy when the time does come for the swap, I've modded the brackets so that I can essentially just remove this little radiator and a few small brackets, and all I'll have to do is position the new, larger radiator and fab up two new brackets to make it work. In short, because I've modded these brackets now, I can later go in and swap radiators/brackets without having to pull the whole nose (body) off of the car..

I'll likely chase the new radiator in March/April this year (2022)..
