Just a note if you decide to go that way, there is no inner sleeve on the MGB to salvage. The std MGB rubber bush is like any delrin/poly bushes that guys go to these days. a 2- piece part. Only the MGB V8 bushes have a 1 piece bush with bonded sleeves. I'm not sure why they went that way on the V8. It suppose it does reduce the amount of rubber between ID and OD a bit, so flex is less than the std MGB bushes. That helps in better control over bumps, corners and such. If you go with delrin, you will have to source some nice steel tubes to run on. Press fit to the ID of the control arm and a light clearance (and grease) to the sleeve, which is held captured by the large washer on the "pivot".

Got the fake block. This should be a big help. Put the oil pan on and it’s still really lite.

Looks good so far. It seems like we are both fitting engines and cutting tunnels this week.

I forgot to bring the plasma cutter home. Just as well I woke up and feel like garbage. Like a nasty cold is setting in. Next week I’ll cut into the firewall.

Interesting concept with the engine plug.

Stuff like that makes me really want to get a 3d printer.

Totally doable with a big enough printer. Getting all the threaded inserts in there may take some work and layout. Time wise you probably don’t save anything.

Yeah, I'm good for engine placement, but prototyping parts with a 3d printer would be neat.

I just found out that our Public Library has a 3d printer. Cost is 10 cents per gram. You may want to check yours.

A little crazy today. Maybe I went too far? The bellhousing hit everywhere. Now I have to figure out how to put it back together.

Can’t say from my arm chair. You are doing all the work but it is what it is. Moving forward.

Maintain the original steering wheel position and angle.

If the original column lower mount flange will clear, install the column, align the shaft if it will clear, and attach the old flange and half bowl. If the old bit is too far gone from removal, make a new one from 1/8 x 3 or 4 inch strip. Add temporary 1/8 x ½ strips from floor to keep it in position for skinning the tunnel after the column is removed. Don’t worry about captive nuts at this point.

If it will clear the column tube but not the flange, eliminate the flange and make a side mount for the lower end (like you were adding a two bolt pillow block to a shaft). Where the flange will be perpendicular to the column and outboard. I’d use 3/8 bolts and 1/8 x 1-3/8 or so strip (to clear sockets) with 1/8 x ¾ strip sides/ribs. Here is a pic of a simple alternative lower column mount.

If it won’t clear the original column at all, add three joints and a support bearing. Shorten the column by removing the collapsing section completely or just enough to clear, but keep the bearing and flange to stabilize the column. The collapsing feature was more important when the rack pinion and column formed a straight, rigid spear aimed at the driver. You could also add a collapsing dd shaft on the middle shaft (where the support bearing will be) if you want.

Once you have the engine and trans mounts set to the necessary angle for the driveshaft to work with the stock axle (1.5 deg or less and more importantly, equal) and the column is sorted, maximize the driver foot well to be ½ inch from the bell. In setting driveline angles later, you could lose all clearance to the tunnel or realize too late that the throttle pedal space could have been much bigger.

Looks like a lot of fun BTDT, just recently. FWIW, your bell housing is significantly more rearward than mine. You will have fun trying to find a comfortable place for the gas pedal. Not the mounting, but the pedal itself.

FWIW, the instructions I have on the 3.4L install says the engine angle should be 3-5 degrees. During my engine in and out, this last week, I got about 2 degrees on one side and over 5 degrees on the other. Obviously, I was no on a flat surface. The trick is to find a flat surface to measure from. (I just thought I should try the back side of the heads) I might get out today and try to measure the angle on the MGB roadster in the driveway under Winter wraps.

Carry on.......

I have it where I want it but very unsure about the room behind the rack. Is 3-1/2” enough for the harmonic. It’s different than what I have on my engine block. I’m putting the explorer front end on which is shorter. The water pump comes tomorrow so more should be known. As for now we’re plumb, level and square and ready to weld on the mounts.
May have a problem with this bell housing that came with the tranny too. Seems the holes are on a cant, unless something changes when I bolt up the T5 I may need a new one. :BH:

Never seen those mounts before. Many different mounts will fit. If you weld them up and have to change the angle by forcing the trans up or down, getting the bolts in and out in the future can be difficult.

Make sure the t5 and bell are compatible length wise also. Early '90s had a longer than normal input shaft and matching bell.
