For those of you that live in CA and already went thru the SB100 process, did you need to keep the vehicle title and VIN tag from the dashboard?

I thought I read somewhere you need to so CHP can verify it's not stolen? But then again that doesn't make much sense because I'm pretty sure i've seen people pick up used engines from a shop, craigslist, etc.

happy 4th

I assume you mean from the donor car chassis - no.

You DO need to obtain an engine and transmission that has the VIN tag (which should come riveted to each assembly). Doesn't matter if the two are off different cars; they just both need to have a VIN tag. If they don't, you're likely screwed.

Oh, and the CHP (oddly) required that I have the receipt for the chassis steel. That was unexpected and it was dumb luck that I still had it.

That said, the above is as it was back in 2013 or so, when I went through the process.

Thank you that's what I wanted to know. Good thing you told me about the vin tags. The last engine I bought a while ago didn't have a VIN

It's a small aluminum plate with the number stamped on it, permanently affixed. That is, unless it got torn off by accident during removal of the assembly from the car. Make sure it's there if bought site unseen, because they'll likely assume that it's stolen otherwise.

On the 2016 engine that I recently bought, the VIN on the engine is laser etched on a milled surface and then clear coated.

That's a nice improvement, makes it getting mistaken for stolen impossible, but regardless of year and make, make sure it's there one way or another.

I bought a LT1 engine fully rebuilt from a machine/engine shop and what they do is just take any spare small block chevy and build their refurbished units. Some of the blocks didnt have the VIN or it was powdercoated over and basically was non-existent. But good thing I will make sure any donors have visible VINs

That reminds me that when I had an engine shop build my engine, I specifically asked that they used the block that I gave them, for that very reason.

Fully half of the small block Chevys I built over 25 years had no numbers stamped anywhere on them. Most of the ones that did, the numbers had no correlation to anything I could find.

I suspect that, regardless of FMVSS requirements, GM only bothered to stamp engines they expected to deliver to states that checked that sort of thing.

When I went through the SB100 process in 2015, nobody ever mentioned VIN numbers. They wanted receipts for the engine, transmission and diff. The rest was covered by the receipt from Birkin for the kit.

What if you bought the engine used off a private party on Craigslist or Facebook?

Went through the SB-100 process twice. Both times the CHP checked the engine VIN and ran the number through their computer.

Thanks. What about the transmission and did they ask to see a copy of the title as well?

They asked to see the actual VIN tags on both the engine and transmission. It did not matter that they didn't match; they just have to not be on their "stolen" list.

You guys have me thinking...

I bought my Manx already registered special construction, with plates and clean title etc. It's registered as a 1963 special construction, the year of the VW floorpan. It had a VW Engine installed, no clue if the engine serial is on the title- I'd have to double check when I get home. I've since torn out just about all the running gear to install a Honda V6. Do I have to go back to CHP to have them change the title to match the new motor? I wasn't planning on it... I figure since it's been through the process and already been placed in the DMV system I'm free to do whatever.
