Stumbled across this and thought it might be worth sharing. The T5s, being rated for around 300 FT lbs of torque, don't stand up to hard hitting racing conditions for long. The upgrade to a trans that can handle the punishment can become quite expensive.
The late 70's early 80's ford mustang (and a few others) came with a 302 backed by an AROD 4spd trans.

These transmissions used the same bell housing bolt pattern as the later Tremec transmissions. These bell housings can be , and have been , used to upgrade a 5.0 HO motor's T5 to the much tougher Tremecs.

The AROD bells can be found on Ebay for about $45.00. The after market pieces, for the conversion, are over $200.00.
I've seen them locally on Craig's list,prices ranging from $50.00 to $100.00.
I'll confess, pacrat that I am, I grabbed one, just in case...
