I recall a couple of recent builds are using MGB donors.
Scored a couple of B's really cheap today, so that may be what I now want to use for the 442 build.
Had been planning on BOP/R 215 but the trans is an issue and rebuilding them is a bit pricey.
MGB should be much more "Locost" and almost traditional.

Richard, that is like asking how much does a car cost. A full rebuild by a national recognized specialist vs a DIY rings/bearings and gasket rebuild will have a very wide range of costs. I would think anywhere from a couple hun for a DIY refresh to a few thou for a truly rebuilt.

Also, there is a big difference in in driving experience between an MGB drivetrain and a BOP215. It sounds like you are following Uncle Ron Champion's book on building on the cheap. Nothing wrong with that. I rather prefer that myself. Figure there is a good chance that the cam and followers need replacing.

Sorry this isn't a good answer. As with many things, the devil is in the details.

Rebuild "Kit" around $500.00
That does not include a new cam, doing the head, machining the block, or Carb refresh.
Since a couple of recent builds use MGB engines I thought one of those builders might chime in.
Makes sense that almost any four should be less expensive than any V8.
The 215 transmission issue is the real deal breaker for me, $650 for just the bell housing.

You may or may not know of these alternates to Moss for MGB engine parts.

http://www.sportscarpartsltd.com/
https://www.bpnorthwest.com/
https://northwestimportparts.com/

Then there are the independent specialists found on MGExperieince.com that can supply parts too.

It has been 4 decades since I used northwestimportparts and bpnorthwest. Both were good suppliers back when I rebuilt a couple of “B” series engines in my MGA’s. Replacing cams and lifters; and rocker shafts and rocker bushings are pretty much a must IMO. The cylinders seem to be pretty strong unless they get scored or left out to rust and pit. For a budget build, you might get away with a ring and hone. The best crank and rod bearings are tri-metal. I’m not sure if the ones I listed below are tri-metal.

From northwestimportparts:
Ring set = 55
Rod bearing set = 44
Main bearings = 26
Thrust washer set= 10.5
Reground stock grind cam = 95
Cam thrust plate = 20
Lifters = ~5 ea x8
Rocker shaft = 24
Rocker bushings = 2 ea x 8
Payen (recommended) Head Gasket set = 49
Generic lower gasket set =15
Rear engine seal = 15
Timing cover seal = 2

I bought my rebuild kit from Rock Auto. All in gaskets, valve seals, rod bearings, main bearings, thrust washers, cam bearings, and ring set was under $300

I will be picking up the B's after the 442 trip.
By the end of the month I am to have 30'x48' of concrete floor to work on. :D
I think I will dismantle both engines and build the best.
Hoping to get it done at about $1K all in with a cam upgrade.

Sure is easy to toss any budget right out the window!

https://www.classiccarperformance.com/products/mga-mgb-alloy-crossflow-cylinder-head?variant=3440018292762
But a cross-flow aluminum head would certainly make a B engine more interesting and "Tuned".
Twin SU's because I expect to have a set at no additional cost.

Understand the crossflow is NLA, unless classic performance has a stock inventory. In any event, it was evaluated by Flowspeed and found to be no significant horsepower improvement, minor midrange improvement. In addition, the supplied twin SU manifold proved ....disappointing.

  I wish it was so. That ain't happening this year, or maybe next year either. Mine is a long term project, the fact that I was out of commission a couple of times for a combined 6 months last year didn't help the schedule any.

Some useful information here,
https://classicmotorsports.com/articles/how-make-mgb-three-seconds-quicker-six-steps/
Prices for parts have changed. The Cam used in the article is offered by Moss at $599.00.

All the "Glo-Bull Warming" falling from the sky has really loused up my week.
Supposed to get one dry day tomorrow.
Need a couple of clear days to reassemble the truck so that I may go get the 442.

I think I'm pretty set on using the B drivetrain now.
Trying to restrain myself from finding a Weber DCOE intake and hot cam.
I have other builds with more power than may be used in civilized society.
Or maybe I'm getting old?
