Thanks Laminar. You are right, most likely that is the smartest move.
I was hoping to use an engine, that is already turbocharged and I don't have to figure out things on my own.
But how cheap are the 2.5l engines, it makes sense to use one, and see if it has enough power(never driven a Locost yet).

NC Miata 6 speeds are a fair bit stronger than the 5 speed box just like they are in the NB. The early 06-08 had 3-4 shift fork issues. 09+ fixed that issue.

Can I use a trans, from a much newer Miata? I didn't know that. Thanks for that.

So, if I would pick up an engine from Ebay, that receipt would be enough for the (CA)DMV?

Not sure on CA regs, but one would assume the seller would have all sufficient info (VIN, Make/model) on the receipt.
For TX, I'd think that would be sufficient for satisfying source origin of the engine.

Tricky part for me, is that Mazda didn't VIN stamp rotaries.

The NC Miata gearbox will fit, as the MZR/Duratec/Ecoboost are the same block as mentioned elsewhere. A current Miata (ND) probably wouldn't fit as it's a completely different engine series (SkyActiv). Don't know that for sure, but I wouldn't get an ND gearbox without doing thorough research... and the early ND 6 speeds had issues as well.

Since everything is the same, the Ford 2.5L has to be mounted at 10 degrees, right?
I will need a shortened sump?
