High-mount/ 3rd brake light options?

Hey guys,

Wondering what you are running for high-mounts? I'm looking to hang on my rollbar, and intend to put a dashcam ahead of the light to keep it less visible and out of the sun.

I did it the hard way. I bought a strip of red LED's (encased in clear rubber - definitely a Harbor Freight-type item), acquired a chunk of 1"X 1" black ABS roughly a foot long, and routered out (using the small milling attachment on my lathe) a groove for the LED strip. Pressed the LED strip into it, ran the wire through a small hole in the roll bar & down into the trunk area, where it connects to one of the brake light wires.

To hang it on the underside of the roll bar, I welded on a couple of small L-shaped brackets (1/16" steel) onto the underside of the bar, so the L's hook under each end of the ABS. Two screws up through the L shapes into the ABS secures it all.

It makes a REALLY bright high brake light, and uses virtually no measurable amount of power. Because the LED's are completely encased in clear rubber (vinyl? PVC?), they're totally waterproof.

Here is a link to the brackets. It should also show you the lights that go in the bracket. These are common trailer lights. They are bright, and can be used as a running light as well.

I originally had a strip of LED's. maybe 21 LED's all in a row. I was very unhappy with the light intensity and light directionality. IT mattered a lot if the following car was a raised pickup truck vs Honda Civic. However the installation did look stealth(ish).I swapped it over to one of the ubiquitous LED trailer lights discussed above. Mine had a chromed plastic trim rather than being encased in rubber WOW that grabs attention.

I want one of those flashing ones like you see on ambulances. It flashes 3 times and then gives the steady red.

I didn't think they were legal for cars, but I've begun seeing the module to do the flashing show up on trucks and some cars.

I use a module that enables the fast-switching-then-on-full. Same as you, I saw it on an ambulance and thought that it really drove home the point of "on the brakes." Because it doesn't flash the left and right brake lights, I doubt you'd get in trouble for it, but have no proof.

I've seen some 3rd brake lights with that feature, but since I've begun to see it on more vehicles I'm wondering if most of them aren't just a module.

I like the idea of just the 3rd light doing the flashing legalities aside.

Here's a couple of pics of mine, the one I was describing in my previous post. It's seriously bright, no matter what direction it's viewed from - even at 60 degrees off angle, above or below, or to either side. The second pic shows it viewed from way off to the side, and well above. It's still blinding.

It's a simple strip of red LEDs in clear rubber, inset into a hunk of ABS. It's too bright to be able to see the brackets that hold it to the roll bar, but you get the idea.

I didn't think they were legal for cars, but I've begun seeing the module to do the flashing show up on trucks and some cars.

Last I checked they were not legal and were something dealers installed on new cars and tacked on to the sticker price. I've spotted a bunch of Kias in the DFW area and I believe they were all from the same dealer (Moritz if my memory is correct). I'm guessing a bunch of people got taken for a few hundred bucks and will get pulled over at some point for illegal equipment.

Good ideas in this thread. Another somewhat related topic I'd like to discuss is how to hide wires. Something like a wiremold, but that could be bent to follow vehicle contours would be great.
