I'm still pushing to have this car ready for a 200 mile one-day rally/drive up the Santa Barbara coast next weekend. My 'must do' list is shrinking, and she's been running well since I remedied the kickstand cutout problem. These pics show some quick and dirty fiberglassing over the driver's side rear tire at full bump; this in an effort so better close up the back of the car. She's a long way from done, but may just be cobbled together enough to take part 8)

Have you changed your mind on the door/rocker stretch for the next one? It would also reduce the driveshaft angle and save a lot of extra glass-work.

Snap-in foam-backed upholstery would save an inch or two back and bottom over separate buckets.

I hear you MV8.. I still haven't decided what I'm going to do to achieve the needed interior room when it comes time to build Berk II... The door/rocker stretch makes sense for all of the reasons you mention, but in the photoshop (which is really well done btw  ), I can't help but notice the change in proportions... This is not to say that Berkeley got it perfect, but I've spent so much time with this stubby wheelbase car that to make it longer externally just looks 'off.' I do have to wonder though that if I did stretch that car, that once it's out in the wild (and not sitting right next to an unaltered body), it would look just fine stretched at the doors.

In the big picture, I'm getting burned down right now and I can feel it, so once this Berk is in better shape, I'll likely take some time away from the build bench to recharge a bit. I'm thinking I'll use a DCT VFR1200 on the next Berk, so I'll likely use the planned down time to collect the needed parts before I start that build. Lots of time to argue with myself over how to build the next one

Sorry I've not commented for a while but for some reason I stopped receiving update notifications... and assumed you were taking a break.
Today i went to the Board Index and was pleased to see you're still "up-and-at-'em" - a few other guys I've been following sadly do seem to be 'on a break'...
It's good to catch up, as i still marvel at your ingenuity, but I shed more than one tear over your motor problems - so pleased this has been resolved.

MangPong! You're back! :D I've been wondering what happened to you.. Nice that you checked in.. Same old same old around here.. build it, break it, fix it.. The loss of that motor was in fact a bit of a setback, but I think I'm back on the path now

May 9, 2021

On Saturday the 8th we celebrated my youngest daughter's 18th birthday and Mother's Day combined, which allowed for some build time on Sunday.. The effort on this day was to close up the rear of the car. I didn't totally succeed as I still need to seal off the driveshaft area, but for the most part she's sealed up as well as I plan to do on this temporary body. I also reinstalled all 3 sections of the firewall.

A Sort-of Milestone..

In less than a week I plan to drive this car on a 200 mile round trip.. I'll have just a handful of tools and a AAA card, but I'd really like to not need any of those things. I don't yet have the confidence in the build to be venturing too far from home, but at some point, you've just got to do it; it either runs, or you find your next point of failure.

So today (May 9, 2021) I thought I'd put it to the test, albeit on a smaller scale.. Could I take it up the coast at will, for say a 50 mile round trip, and have it get me home? I set off with said tools and AAA card to see. It was a beautiful day out here; I took surface streets for awhile, then got out on the highway; Avila beach was the turn-around goal. I'm happy to say the car did great! The way she's geared, her revs match her speed (i.e. 70 mph = 7,000 rpms), and that got old quick, but other than the noise, she was a joy. (Aside: noise-cancelling headphones saved my but on this one, and they work really well.. I've got the beginnings of tinnitus, so I'm trying to be more careful with my hearing now).

A few things of note... At 65+ mph, the front-hinged hood really wants to float open at the back edge (up by the windshield.. I plan to eventually reduce the grille opening and create some vents/openings for the under-hood air to better flow out. I also have an issue with heat getting into the passenger area, but this was expected. I have not yet taken the time to close up some GAPING holes/seams at the firewall.. For it's part, the motor (coolant) never got hot.. in traffic she'd go up to 218, the fan would kick on, and the temp would come right back down.

A good outing all in all.. it's a little intimidating to drive among the 'normal-sized' cars at 70 mph, but just like when I rode street bikes, you get used to it, and you keep your head on a swivel :drive:

Congrats on the short endurance test drive. It should give you a bit more confidence in your upcoming 200 mile RT. My experience is not quite the same. In the last 4 days I've done a 50 mi RT, a 70 mi RT and a shorter ~15 mile RT with no issues. I still lack the confidence to do a 1,000+ mile RT yet.

I look forward to reading of your successful 200 mile trip.

Seriously? You drive that thing all the way to Avila and back and you dont even get pulled over?
Meanwhile I get pulled over for having a mild tint on the front windows of my completely invisible daily driver?

A charmed life.
Congrats on getting kids to adulthood and the successful test drives.

..I'm not sure if I'm charmed or if the cops I've seen just feel sorry for me

So the driving route for tomorrow has been released.. looks like it will end up being 261 miles total for me.. there's also a slight chance of drizzle.. Nothing major, but a little voice in my head is suggesting I take the Volvo instead.. We'll see..

Assuming I am taking the Berkeley, I've been chasing last minute issues. A temporary fix for keeping the hood closed is to try out these little 1" hood 'pins' / buttons I found online.. They're little cheapies, but they might work for my needs. When I swap the red body on I'll do something altogether different.

Mid May 2021

JAMADOR came through big time and delivered where others not dare tread  The PC-V made it, and after a bit of trial and error I was able to download a map that should hypothetically be close to what I need- at least close enough to get me going.. Already it starts easier and runs smoother.. also my off-idle hesitation is now gone :D

I still need to go in and sync the starter valves, and I also need to learn how to use the Dynojet "Autotune" device that piggybacks onto the PCV.. I struggle a bit with tech, so I'll climb the Autotune learning curve later this summer.

The car is still very raw at this point, but little by little she's getting better.

Hope the cookies were tasty.
The little hood pins don't look like a bad solution, for a pretty unobtrusive looking latch.

"What is it?"

I normally de-badge my builds if it cleans up the body, but in this case, this car really, really needs it's nameplate left on for all to see.

As you would imagine, people are curious about this little oddball, and the #1 thing they want to know is what is it? So the hood emblem I was originally going to ditch will get tarted up and put right back where it belongs.

If you can't take the heat...

I'm having a terrible time with engine heat getting into the passenger area. Super cheeseball, but for tomorrow's (Sat 5-15-21) coastal drive, I've taped in some temporary heat control material (Reflectix).. I don't think it did much good... I took another little 50 mile trip yesterday, and I'm still getting a lot of heat in the cabin.. When I swap bodies in a few months I'll be able to address this problem more effectively, but in the interim, it's just going to be a bit warm in the driver's seat.

Needs a stiffer shifter..

I mocked up a temporary shift lever (1/4" rod) that comes out from under the dash, but it was never intended to be the final version.

I replaced it with version #2 that is now made of 5/16" rod and mildly reworked angles. I want to drive it for awhile with this 'new' version and see if I like the shift knob position, or if it still needs some tweaking.
