The Pismo Classic Car Show was this weekend, so I went to see what I could see.

Tire Stretch; I didn't know this was a thing to do on larger truck tires(?) - the sidewall stretch.. to each their own, and I'm certainly not the safety police, but I'd think you'd pop a bead once and again..

2-door wagon cool; This is one of my heroes! I love a shooting brake as-is, but to work this door treatment into it really stood out.. fun car, and the owner doesn't take himself too seriously..

LOW  .. I loved this car.. chopped/channelled/bagged and around 40" tall.. Purists be damned.. cut, shrink, mod, mold until it's as you wish.. major skill here to keep those flowing contours.. sweet car.. I hope he takes it to the next level..

More Pismo Show...

The odd stuff is in the parking lot;

How long has it been since you've seen one of these in the wild?! This little 4-door wonder looks like its just a car that's still in service, gettin' the job done.. pretty cool.. (what's really weird is I saw one of these in orange, even in 4-door trim, just a few days later bombing around Santa Maria.. I don't think I've seen one of these in 20 years, and now 2 within a week!).

Groovy Baby!.. So Meyers had his Manx (RIP), but what about the countless one-offs that followed? I didn't catch a name/make on this one, but it's groovy-rific, and right at home in this beach town..

So how do you get in? The black/flamed car below had me wondering, "How to you get in?" It took me more than a minute to understand what the driver must do to snuggle down into this wee beast.. did you spot it?

A Tiny Trailer

I've known about these for awhile, but I don't see them very often.. I think it's an "Allstate" trailer (mudflap has the name).. they're a one-wheel job, usually they have a shapely metal tub on them, and they're pretty popular with the VW crowd.. I think it would be cool to drag one around behind the Berkeley, but for no real reason other than they're of the period and they look cool.. Not super functional, but cool at any rate 8) .

The buggy is a KDM “Bushwacker”, a knock off of the Ocelot SS. You could rent Bushwackers in Hawaii, back in the day. Groovy.

I spotted it right away. Even before I read your question. Of course I would, I'm a fan of flip tops.

Flathead drags (RPM Nationals) at Santa Margarita Ranch this weekend (9/25) if you are looking for a long cruise up and over the grade...

Just saw that they're doing Cruise Night in town the night before, should be a good turnout.

Bushwackers, Fliptops, and Flatheads.. thanks for chiming in guys

Back out to the Berkeley- sort of...

It's been awhile since I've fabbed anything.. I've been a bit burned out from the push to get the Berk ready for the Reno event last month.. It's been awhile since then, and the itch to build is starting to set in again.. So I've been wandering out to the garage to contemplate next steps..

I want to address the tires and wheels, something I've never been completely happy with on this car.- the reality is my 185-60R13s that I've been running around on are starting to dry rot; they're old. I've decided my new 'daily use' tires will be tall and skinny, as close to the OEM look as possible, on steel 13" wheels. I've settled on Firestone 145R13 rubber, and 4.5 x 13 (36 offset) wheels.. My suspension is off a bit for the offsets available, so I'll have to run 1" wheel spacers..

I'm not sure what I'm going to do for my set of 'track tires'... In the last pic you might recognize the minilight wheels- Steve pulled those from the N600 and gave them back to me as he doesn't need them (thanks Steve! :) )... In the pic they've got (old) 175/50R13 tires on them, which I think will be a good size (RMP range) for track days.. Just need to convince myself that it's what I want before I go and buy sticky tires in that size..

Drool, minilights.
Hoping to source a set for the Rotus, in a narrower spec than the 15x10 Bassets that are on it now (wearing Hoosiers).
Guess the Bassets would make a fine track wheel until/unless the Hoosiers wear out.

I like the looks of these wheels JAMADOR, but they're not real minilights.. These are "Western Wheels," just cheapie knock offs.. Doesn't change the look though.. love 'banana-spoke' rims 8)

**Those Basset wheels have an 'all about business' track-day look about them 8)

Agreed, Panasport, Minilights, Watanabe, other replicas. Love the look & hoping I can find a reasonable set in my bolt pattern, but have a ways to go before then.
If the Hoosiers all hold air, they'll be my 'test & tune' tire for puttering around the neighborhood, once it's assembled & before it gets its inspections/registration sorted.

I found a lot of Mercedes S class since the 80s have an IRS diff with 2.65 ratio. Easy to find for about $250.

These are great finds on those ratios Miatav8... for any 'pleasant' highway use, it seems I need a diff final drive of about 2.6/2.7-ish... I'm researching a Jeckle and Hyde approach that while it's spendy, it could solve several problems..

I've landed at this:

http://eliteracingtransmissions.com/cat ... /mx200-il/

..Does anyone here have experience with this unit? It provides IRS, Reverse, 'Quick-Change' gearsets, LSD, and it doesn't care which way your driveshaft rotates.. I'm just researching, but I think it would be about 3.5K/4K to get one shipped to the states (with an extra gearset).. This would give me 'pleasant freeway' gears, and with a gear change, I can be on the track and in the correct RPM band.. Again, decidedly not locost, but what a neat package that addresses several BEC issues...

70.5 lbs w/ aluminum case..
60.0 lbs w/ optional magnesium case..

I can't remember all of my bit's weights from memory, but with my Rav4 pumpkin, my SBC starter, and my Iron ring gear (the latter 2 to get reverse), I think I'm up near 60-ish pounds as I sit.. I wouldn't mind the additional 10lbs with one of these if I gain an LSD, ideal ratio(s), AND a legit reverse 8)
