I ordered a unit from Wema. Their senders are standard 5-hole patterns, you can get the split under-ring to fasten them. Come in 0.5" increments. Pretty cheap and spiffy for our purposes.

If you already have the gauge, make sure that the sender is compatible with it, i.e. 0=0 and full = 100%.

As far as how to mount them, it'll be obvious once you receive the sender. Some... (most?) expect to drop down over studs mounted to the tank, and typically include a cork gasket.

Like KB stated you need to know what the gauge can handle. Fuel level sending units are just potentimeters (resistance). You need to know what the gauge can accommodate. Most gauges can be calibrated to different inputs (0-90 ohms, 240-33 ohms, 0-30 ohms, etc.) Make sure the gauge is compatible with the sensor.

questions,

1. are you trying to mount a sender unit on a curved surface? if so try moon equipment

2. as it's an autometer guage, you will have to run two, thats 2 wires to the sender, one for the calibration and a ground, all the way from the guage to the sender, do not think that a local ground at the guage and another at the sender will do because it won't.

3. an additional power wire, ignition switched will be needed for the guage power.

4. a lighting wire from the light switch to the bulb holder is also required and will need an additional ground.

well guys i worked on the car all day. and low and behold i found a brand new sending unit on the top shelf. my dad before he passed from brain cancer would go out and clean up the shop so finding things are some what dificult at times.i did check the ohms mentioned previuosly and it was right on. what i am going to have to do is find a aluminum bung to weld on to the spun tank.

Use a hole-saw and drill a hole slightly larger than the sensor mounting flange, then weld in a segment of tubing, just enough to rise up so you can weld a flat plate to it in order to attach the sensor to it. That's what I'd do.
