New Mustang Ecoboost 4 cyl
Here's a write up by Pistonheads on the new Mustang that's going to England
http://www.pistonheads.com/news/default.asp?storyId=30857&utm_source=2014-9-18&utm_medium=email&utm_content=html&utm_campaign=newsletter
Forget most of the article but look at the engine specs!
And it has an IRS
Could this be a new potential donor?

Re: New Mustang Ecoboost 4 cyl
It certainly would not be low cost, but Ford is looking to supply the 4 cylinder turbo as a crate engine. I have no cost figures or date of availability. It could be ready now. It's going to be a while before 2015 Mustangs are available at our local junk yards at a reasonable price.
Cheers,
Cheers,
Damn! That front slip angle is way too large and the Ackerman is just a muddle.

Re: New Mustang Ecoboost 4 cyl
Actually in the overall scheme of things in how long it takes to build one of these things, people who are building now might be able to get one by the time they're finished.
This engine is in other cars too.

Depending on who bought the car it could be just a matter of weeks!

Re: New Mustang Ecoboost 4 cyl
I would be happy to swap out my 2.3 lima turbo (the orginal svo mustang engine they talk about) for the new and more likely much lighter one. I wonder if its as bulit proof as the old turbo 4

Without a custom or modified ECU it'll be a nightmare to get running without all the emissions gear.

Yes, but they are offering this engine as a crate engine and offering an ecu to work the engine so that problem's solved. Plus this engine is being used in at least one racing series so all of those guys can blaze the trail.

No engine weights are given, but here are two sources of technical information. You can see both the V6 and I4 turbo are very different from the older Mustang engines.
1) Tech article ==> http://www.mustangecoboost.net/threads/ ... 5/#post212
2) Detailed specs ==> http://forumfoundrycdn.com/nickj/auto/m ... cs_USA.pdf

Re: New Mustang Ecoboost 4 cyl
I don't think these motors have anything for us. Too complicated, too big - for no benefit for us. Maybe if yu have to pass current emissions, they would help, but you would have to transplant everything...
With over 300 ft.-lb. of torque you will need a big and heavy transmission for these.
We have issues with both space and complication for the home builder and these engines just blow out the budget for those things.
There may be a race series for the I4, but that is because both Ford and some organization are looking for marketing, not because they will be suited for putting in a race car...
In the short article Lonnie pointed us to, they bother to mention that the shifter now doesn't hit the cup holders. In an article that is only one page long they find a sentence on that subject to be important enough to include in the article because they have so little to say. This car is yet again larger and heavier than before. Give me a Fox body anyday... We know how to fix those!

Interesting that the detailed specs don't include the car's weight.

the piston heads article lists it as 1600Kg, which = 3520 lbs. not especially light.
most of the modern "pony cars" are real tanks. the fricken challenger is somewhere aroun g 4200 lbs. the Camaro isn't any lightweight either.
at one of the local cruise nights, there was a new-ish camaro parked close by a 1968 RS...the '68 car looked small comparitively, and much less cartoonish. can't fault chevy for giving the new camaro some road race track cred though. even though its still a tank.

They cover it up by using very sticky and expensive tires. I owned a 1995 Camaro Z28 and learned that the hard way. During one practice autocross event I wore down the tires about 50%. That worked out to about $50 tire wear per lap...

interesting we were doing Solo II about the same years then. I was also driving a camaro, though an '87 Z28 (F3) with the quadrabog 305 and a shift-kitted 700R4. I ran it on some street-tire take-offs (I swear, I went to the local tire shops and scrounged their take-off piles out in back). I use to treat them with Speedway motors traction compound. if I settled down and drove well I couild count on mid pack, but I really couldn't keep up with the serious dudes in F4 camaros running the Hoosier "street slicks"
I have video somewhere...

Not so much plural, it's offered in one other vehicle, and its not a car. The 2.3L EcoBoost is currently offered in the Mustang and the 2015 Lincoln MKC. That engine also has a different tune and only puts out 285 hp/305 lb-ft verses the 310 hp/320 lb-ft offered in the Mustang.

Re: New Mustang Ecoboost 4 cyl
The torques output is right about the rated max for a T5 in a much heavier car. ... So if you don't mind running close to the limit it should hold for a while.
A stripped down ECU would get you almost home, as delivered you'd probably still need to run an emission system of sorts.
(closed fuel system, PCV, catalyst, etc. I'm assuming EGR has been taken over by variable valve timing)
A Ford Racing ECU and wiring would probably cost about the same as an aftermarket system. ..
But it's a new platform and therefore exxxxpensive.
