Right now it looks like it just impacts dune buggies and sand rails but they're heading in the direction of banning "re-bodied" vehicles.

Saw that on Jalopnik this morning.
I've often wondered what TX is smoking.

They're one of the few states that explicitly makes it illegal to run ex-military vehicles on the roads due to "safety issues", but they let rotten to pieces F9000's roam free.
And now this...

I feel pretty safe in CA, covered by the same law that legalizes Cobras and requires inspections by the CHP and BAR.

I believe that was part of the same thing. In the eyes of a bureaucrat, an exo-skeleton makes a sports car into a sand rail, which were among the first vehicles singled out by this action!

If Texas can justify this on safety grounds, what is next? A ban on motorcycles!
My bet is that a lot Texas tax dollars are going to piss away in court.

I understand correctly, it appears Texas hasn't had a pre-title inspection process, and it sounds like this is easier/cheaper for the state than instituting one. While I'm not happy about our mandatory inspection process here, perhaps it's a blessing in disguise...when the government has forced you to produce your hand-made vehicle for examination and testing, and pronounced it safe for the road, it would be hard for them to justify reversing that in the future.

My thoughts go out to Texas Locost builders!!

But -our- insurance is Gov't run, and they can always change their mind. Far be it for the Gov't to use logic and reason.

A quick phone call down to the state gave me this info.

This is meant for obviously off road vehicles and they said our Locosts were safe.

For now!
All it takes is ONE zealot determined to "Save us from ourselves" and the "Law" may be "Reinterpreted" as they see fit with no need for new legislation.
Worst of this is that the zealot may not even be elected!
I've been burned by "Gov. Org. knows best" before, more than once.
Guys in Texas need to get ahead of this or it WILL expand.
Bureaucrats are answerable to the legislature, but it sometimes takes new legislation, court orders, or both to convince them of that fact.

Nothing beats an immediate, and vocal, backlash to make politicians and bureaucrats pause for a second thought. Be LOUD, be LOGICAL, be ORGANIZED, and they'll have to listen. Especially politicians, who shudder at the thought of organized protest against something they're doing, particularly when an election is looming...
